ad hoc mode - technical definition

In wireless local area networks (WLANs), a temporary manner of operation that allows devices such as laptop computers to spontaneously discover each other and communicate directly, without the involvement of a centralized hub, or access point (AP). IEEE 802.11b and Bluetooth both include provisions for ad hoc mode. See also 802.11b, AP, Bluetooth, infrastructure mode, and WLAN.
