ad hoc mode - technical definition

In wireless local area networks (WLANs), a temporary manner of operation that allows devices such as laptop computers to spontaneously discover each other and communicate directly, without the involvement of a centralized hub, or access point (AP). IEEE 802.11b and Bluetooth both include provisions for ad hoc mode. See also 802.11b, AP, Bluetooth, infrastructure mode, and WLAN.

The mode of operation in a peer-to-peer wireless network, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, in which computers communicate with each other rather than to a central base station (access point).
