App Store - technical definition
An extension to Apple's iTunes online store that offers free and paid applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. Launched with the iPhone 3G in July 2008, the App Store is an additional menu option on the iTunes Store Web page. See mobile app stores, iPhone and jailbreak.

The App Store was a new iTunes menu option when the iPhone 3G was introduced in July 2008. A major enhancement for iPhone users, the App Store was an outstanding success. Within 10 months, downloads passed the one billion mark with more than 35,000 free and paid apps online.
