axis - technical definition

  1. In geometry and optics, a straight line, either real or imaginary, around which a body or figure, or parts thereof, are symmetrically or evenly arranged or composed. In an optical fiber, for example, the axis is the centerpoint of a cross-section.
  2. In optics, an imaginary line perpendicular to the center of a lens or mirror.
