Cartesian coordinates - technical definition

In mathematics, any of the coordinates that locate a point on a plane and measure its distance from an axis at which two or more planes intersect. Such a point is identified by its position relative to the x-axis (horizontal) and y-axis (vertical) in a two-dimensional grid, chart, or graph, or by its position relative to the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis (depth) in a three-dimensional grid, chart, or graph.
