desktop search - technical definition

An application used to find data in a user's local system. Desktop search programs are typically able to search the content in common Microsoft formats such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook as well as locally stored Web pages. Some search programs support non-Microsoft formats as well. In order to provide quick access to such files, desktop search programs create indexes of the content on the hard disk and maintain them.
