direct media access - technical definition
A computer that can play a CD or DVD without booting up the operating system. Independent play, pause, forward, back and volume buttons reside either on the keyboard. On laptops, they are often found externally on the case. See portable media player.

A separate set of media control buttons on a computer means that you can play CDs and DVDs without turning the computer on.
