DOS/Windows format - technical definition

DOS and Windows use a file system known as the File Allocation Table (FAT) to keep track of data on a disk. All floppy disks and hard disks must be initialized with the FAT before use. This is known as a high-level format. Windows NT/2000/XP can optionally use its own native format (see NTFS). See format program.
