dynamic drive mapping - technical definition

The ability to automatically assign a drive letter to a remote drive and release the assignment when the application no longer needs it. In the PC world, this was especially useful in the early days of Windows 3.1 when applications used multiple CD-ROM drives and all the drive letters were used up. Subsequently, UNC names eliminated the need for drive mapping. See drive mapping and UNC.
