fixed pixel display - technical definition

Refers to computer and TV screen technologies such as LCD and plasma that use an unfluctuating matrix of pixels. If the input signal is not the same resolution as the display, complex algorithms adjust (scale) the resolution up or down to conform to the display's fixed number of pixels in each row and column.

In contrast, the CRT's electronics architecture "paints" the screen with the required number of pixels horizontally and vertically. CRTs can be designed to more easily accommodate a wide range of inputs (VGA, XVGA, NTSC, HDTV, etc.). See DTV.
