GAN - technical definition

Previously known as Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA).The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) global standard for the use of Wi-Fi (802.11) unlicensed spectrum to provide mobile handsets with seamless connectivity between wireless local area networks (WLANs) and both cellular and fixed mobile wide area networks (WANs).The ultimate GAN goal is Fixed Mobile Convergence, which is the seamless melding of fixed IP-based fixed wireless (e.g.,Wi-Fi and WiMAX) and cellular radio networks.
