germanium - technical definition

A grayish-white semi-metallic element (No. 32 in the Periodic Table of Elements) used extensively in semiconductors transistors, diodes, and rectifiers. Fiber optic diodes commonly are made of germanium due to its efficient response to infrared light. Germanium commonly is used as a dopant in the manufacture of silica-based optical fibers.
