HAMR - technical definition

(Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording) A future technique from Seagate for increasing the bit density on magnetic disks by using a more stable recording medium that does not succumb to the superparamagnetic limit. In order to write the bit into the medium, a laser heats the area momentarily, which then cools down. HAMR is expected in the 2010 time frame. See superparamagnetic limit and OAW.
