LED TV - technical definition

A flat panel LCD TV set that uses LEDs (light emitting diodes) for its backlight source rather than the traditional CCFTs (cold cathode fluorescent tubes). Smaller and using less power, LEDs produce deeper blacks and more saturated color due to their greater optical range over fluorescent bulbs. LED-based LCD TV sets came on the market in the 2007-2008 time frame. However, rather than use a more drawn-out "LED-based LCD" moniker, the industry chose to call them "LED TVs," even though LCD is the type of TV, and LED is a secondary component.
