lsof Tool - technical definition

A UNIX-specific diagnostic tool whose name means “LiSt Open Files.” It lists all files that processes running on the computer system have opened. It also lists the communications opened by each process. For these reasons, lsof is used by system administrators to figure out whether all the processes running are legitimate.
