A UNIX-specific
diagnostic tool whose name means “LiSt Open Files.” It lists all files that
processes running on the computer system have opened. It also lists the
communications opened by each process. For these reasons, lsof is used by
system administrators to figure
out whether all the processes running are legitimate.
