LTO - technical definition

(Linear Tape Open) A family of open magnetic tape standards developed by HP, IBM and Quantum (formerly the Certance subsidiary of Seagate) that are licensed to third-party vendors. LTO cartridges contain a memory that stores historical usage data. In 1998, two formats were introduced: a single-hub Ultrium and dual-hub Accelis. They shared common components such as read/write head, track layout and servo technology. Ultrium's first and second generation native capacities are 100GB and 200GB.

The proposed Accelis format featured a cassette with a midpoint load similar to Magstar MP, but only 25GB. The single-hub Ultrium format quickly gained customer preference, and demand for Accelis never materialized. For information, visit www.lto-technology.com.
