mechanical splice - technical definition

In optical fiber installation and repair, the semi-permanent joining of two fibers through the use of a plastic or metal crimp sleeve filled with index-matching gel. See also fusion splice, index-matching gel, and splice.

A type of fiber-optic splice that uses a connector to bridge between the two ends. Contrast with fusion splice.
