mini application - technical definition

(1) A small program or utility that performs a specific and somewhat limited function.

(2) A small program that resides on the user's desktop. The Sidebar panel on the Windows Vista desktop contains mini applications called "gadgets," while the Dashboard panel on the Macintosh is used to hold "widgets." See Sidebar, gadget, Mac Dashboard and widget.
