platter - technical definition
One of the disks in a hard disk drive. Each platter provides a top and bottom recording surface. There may be only one or several platters in a drive with each platter having its own pair of read/write heads. See magnetic disk.
A Lotta Platters
It seems that disk platters will spin for many years to come. This earlier 5.25" drive held 9GB total in all of its 14 platters. Today's drives would have 100 times the storage capacity in that amount of platter space. (Image courtesy of Singapore Technologies.)
