Demand assigned multiple access (DAMA), for example, is a protocol that assigns available channel capacity to an Earth station from a pool of bandwidth, on demand and as available. The Earth station transmits request to send (RTS) messages to the satellite until it responds with a clear to send (CTS), at which time the message transmission ensues. See also DAMA.
An electrical line on a serial interface (e.g., a COM port) that a terminal asserts to indicate it has information to send. The other device may give permission by asserting clear to send (CTS). See also serial communications.
