STS - technical definition

Speech-To-Speech. A Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) offering that enables a person with a speech disability to use his or her own voice to speak to the called party through a call administrator (CA) specially trained to understand speech affected by a variety of disorders.The CA acts as a facilitator, repeating the spoken words in a clear and understandable manner. Synchronous Transport Signal.The electrical equivalent of the Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) optical signal, according to North American standards. The STS is known as Synchronous Transport Module (STM) in Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) terminology, according to ITU-T international standards.The signal begins in electrical format as a T3 signal plus SONET/SDH signaling and control overhead, and converts to optical format for transmission over the SONET optical fiber facilities. (Synchronous Transport Signal) The electrical equivalent of the SONET optical signal. In SDH, the European counterpart of SONET, STS is known as STM (Synchronous Transport Module). The signal begins in electrical format and is converted to optical for transmission over the SONET fiber facilities. An STS-1 frame is transmitted in 125ms, yielding raw bandwidth of 51.84 Mbps. The STS frame includes five elements: Synchronous Payload Envelope, Section Overhead, Line Overhead, Path Overhead, and Payload.

The STS-1 frame is the basic building block for SONET, much like the DS1 frame in a T-carrier environment. See OC and SONET.
