If a peripheral device, such as a scanner, was turned off when you started the computer, the application may not recognize the device until Windows rescans the hardware. To perform the rescan, do the following:
Windows Vista
1. Click Start menu/Control Panel
2. Click Hardware and Sound/Device Manager
or
2. if in Classic View, Click Device Manager
3. Click Action/Scan for Hardware Changes.
Windows 2000/XP
1. Click Start menu.
2. Select Settings/Control Panel/System
3. Click Hardware tab, then Device Manager.
4. Click Action/Scan for Hardware Changes.
Rescan Peripherals (Windows Vista, XP and 2000)
The Scan for Hardware Changes button in Device Manager (from the Action menu) rescans and identifies the attached peripherals that are turned on.
Windows 95/98
1. Click Start menu.
2. Select Settings/Control Panel/System.
3. Click the Device Manager tab.
4. Click Refresh.
