WIS - technical definition

A protocol sublayer that enables compatibility between 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) equipment and SONET long-haul equipment in a LAN-to-WAN interface scenario. See also 10GbE, LAN, long haul circuit, SONET, and WAN.
