In May 2006, the Board of Directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) reversed itself and voted against a proposed agreement for an .xxx generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) reserved for pornography. Some argued that .xxx would serve as a positive, if voluntary, means of segmenting the Internet. ICANN tentatively approved the new TLD before receiving an unprecedented level of correspondence in opposition. The .xxx domain has since been rejected multiple times. See also
